Why I Acquired Athlead
Filling a brand gap, strengthening operations, and building for long-term growth.

I’d been watching Athlead grow for a while.
They were a client of ours through Decohub for over 7 years, and over time it became clear there was something solid here - strong brand, good people, and deep roots in the club and school sports space.
But what really stood out was the fit.
Athlead filled a gap we hadn’t fully solved yet. At Hello Co., we’ve built brands like Capital Prints and Trade Workwear.. for event merch, trade uniforms, or B2B promo. But we didn’t have a sports-specific identity that felt right. Capital Prints could deliver the product, sure, and it did - but it was never designed to show up credibly in sport.
Athlead was.
It had the right look, the right tone, and the right relationships - across clubs, suppliers, and community. It just needed a stronger operational backbone.
That’s where the opportunity was.
And on a personal level - sport has always been part of my life. I grew up playing AFL and all kinds of other sports, and I’ve always understood how much of a difference the right gear makes - not just in how you look, but how you feel - on-field and off-field.
Also, I think the best part about a new season or rep team selection was getting new kit, right?
Sport also plays a bigger role in the community. It brings people together. Builds identity. Gives people something to belong to. For me, that's not just a nice side effect - it’s part of the reason I believe this brand has so much potential.
Yes, we’ll improve systems and profitability. But there’s a bigger opportunity to contribute to something more meaningful.
We also saw lots of ways to create more value for their existing clients and partners. There’s already trust in place - our job now is to now build upon that. (I’m excited about this part)
With Decohub’s in-house embroidery, print, and fulfilment capacity, plus our experience scaling workflows across multiple brands, we knew we could elevate Athlead quickly:
- Streamline order management and production
- Transition tech for better CX and scalability
- Leverage our admin to reduce cost and speed up processing
- Build stronger systems behind the scenes - so the brand can keep growing
The brand had already doubled revenue over a few years. It wasn’t broken - but it wasn’t yet profitable, either. That’s a solvable problem with the right structure, tools, and clarity.
Another part of what made the decision easier was the confidence I have in our existing Hello Co. team. I knew we had the capability and experience to make the right changes at Athlead - and to move quickly.
Bringing the Athlead crew over gives us the day-to-day experience and deep client knowledge and together I’m confident we can build something genuinely great.
We’ve now relocated the business into our group HQ in Canberra. The team’s onboard, the transition plan is mapped, and the systems are being rebuilt from the ground up.
The goal isn’t to change what made Athlead strong.
The goal is to amplify it.
Now it’s about doing the work - integrating the brand properly, fixing what needs fixing, and building systems that can actually carry the weight of growth.
That’s where we’re at and why I decided to go all in on Athlead.
